February 21, 2010
...it was a very remarkable day for me. A day I will never forget. Why? Because it marks the start of a new phase in my relationship with my life partner Mai.
Before I tell you what happened on the 21st, let me give you a brief history or background about my relationship with Mai. We are, obviously, a same sex couple. You can read how we met here and what I think about gay marriage here. It was hard for my mother to take it because my brother is also gay. But, out of love for me, she accepted my choice. I was straight before I met Mai... well, I still consider myself straight because I'm actually not attracted to other women. I'm just in love with Mai.
We've been together for almost 5 years now. We've had our own share of ups and downs. We've had a lot of petty fights. We almost gave up, but, I guess God was just testing our relationship and our love for each other. Now, we're happy and, like any other couple (straight or not), we're trying our best to make this relationship last forever because we really love each other.
So... what really happened on the 21st?!? Well, Mai's parents met my parents. Yes, dear readers, our own version of a Pinoy tradition - "pamamanhikan". It wasn't really a typical pamamanhikan. There was no formal asking of my hand because Mai and I have been living together all those years we've been together. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly that meeting went.
Mai's parents live in Cebu. Her dad just came back from a 2-month work and her mom flew to Manila to meet him. Mai and I planned for her to stay here before her dad comes. So, Mai's mom met my parents first. My Nanay's hospitality kicked in. That's when I realized I became a good host because of her. She chatted with Mai's mom for hours. My nanay's a nonstop talker so my brother was telling her to give Mai's mom a break. LOL. But, I didn't really try to stop my Nanay because that's really how she is towards anyone. And that's also her way of keeping stress out of her mind. Most importantly, her telling stories to Mai's mom only showed me that my Nanay's comfortable with her already. And that's good news!
When Mai's dad came with her mom last Sunday, the 21st, my dad also showed his hospitable self. He was the one who chatted up Mai's dad. And it really made me smile. My Nanay also chatted with him, and she even suggested that we all go to Baguio in December and she'll organize the whole trip. Mai and her family have not been to Baguio yet so it sure will be an exciting trip for all of us.
So, that's why the 21st of February 2010 is a very remarkable day for me because this is when 2 of the most important people in my life (my parents) met 2 other people that I love and care about (Mai's parents). Now, I know that we're about to be a big, happy family. So who said only straight couples can experience this?! HAH!
Oh... I forgot to mention... My nanay even referred to Mai's parents as my "byenan" (parents-in-law). *grin*
Thank you, Lord! It was really a happy day for me... I hope this will keep our relationship stronger.
I wasn't able to take photos of Mai's parents with mine so I'll just post separate photos of our families...

Is that your brother in the photo? Ka gwapo man...sayang!
ReplyDeleteThanks Allen & BUtteryFly, but, actually, it's not our anniversary. I just posted that scrappage that I made for her for our 4th year anniv. :)
ReplyDelete@Anti Aging: Hahaha! That's what they all say! Pero ganun talaga ata. lolz.
Paminsan-minsan I find your blog too slow to load. Siguro, due to poor internet connections...I'm using Globe and Smart - the only 2 available here in my place...Palawan :)
ReplyDeleteAww really? It could be the images because I usually post high resolution photos, like on this post, that when you click it, you'd see the actual, larger version.
ReplyDeleteFor other posts, though, it should load quickly. All the widgets on my blog have been chosen and organized to minimize loading time. I don't like slow loading pages, too, so it could just be a connection problem on your part 'coz it loads quickly on here. I'm on PLDT dsl.
But, thanks for telling me. I'll try to minimize the image sizes so it'll only link to the actual image, not resize the actual and still have the same file size.
wow sweet naman, lahat boto sila both side! Hope for happiness,
ReplyDeletemagkamukha na kayo :) parang magkapatid lang
That's what we always get - na magkamukha kami, mukhang magkapatid. Everyone who see us always has this impression na we're sisters. Lagi ba naman magkasama eh! :)
