This is in Miss Philippines candidate to the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, Venus Raj's defense over the "major major" mistake that a lot of people are fussing about all over the internet.
Obviously, if you think that her saying "major major" and that being a hit now is CUTE, this post is not for you. This is only meant for those who are mocking Venus Raj over that mistake.
Before I even say anything, you have to watch Venus answer again:
"... In my 22 years of existence, I can say that
there is nothing major major, I mean, problem in my life..."
Okay, I had to emphasize on the phrase "major major, I mean, problem".
If you ask me, Venus Raj was nervous and most of us, when we experience that much anxiety and happiness all at the same time, we tend to repeat words or even forget what we wanted to say.
I don't agree that she meant to say "bonggang bongga" or "malaking malaki" when she said "major major". It was a mistake out of nervousness. If you ask me, she simply repeated the word "major" instead of just saying "major problem". That's why she said "I MEAN" after "major major".
But, no. We Filipinos can be a bit harsh towards our own people. A lot of us started laughing and mocking her for saying "major major" without even listening to the words after. If you listen to her accent, she didn't speak English in Pinoy accent.

A lot of people are even saying that Venus Raj didn't win the title of Miss Universe 2010 because of her saying "major major". Excuse me. A lot of contestants can't answer in English. The judges are fully aware that a lot of the contestants don't use English as their second language. We do, but, I believe they still don't expect us to be really good at it.
Venus Raj didn't win the Miss Universe 2010 pageant because of the content of her answer. She didn't really answer the question. She avoided it, just like most Miss Universe contestants, to look good. To stay perfect in the eyes of the judges and people watching. If you don't know the nature of beauty pageants, then, you need to watch and observe more.
ABC News even calls beauty pageants like Miss Universe as a "sea of perfection" on this video. They made this in defense of Venus Raj having a hard time answering the question asking her to tell about the biggest mistake that she made in her life and how she handled it.
I'm honestly ashamed that they had to make this feature because of all the fuss and mockery thrown towards Venus Raj's answer, mostly coming from her fellow countrymen. It's a freaking hard question! I know, she should've prepared for it, but, who would want to look bad in front of millions of viewers all over the world, especially after the hostage horror that happened the day before?!
I just hope the next contestants would come prepared for questions like this so they know what and how to answer without looking bad. Venus Raj could've just mentioned that she never committed any major mistake, but, just relate a story about a "minor" mistake instead. At least, she answered the question, right?
But, at the end of the day, I'm still freaking proud of Venus Raj. She made it to the TOP 5 out of 80 countries who competed in this year's Miss Universe 2010 pageant. It's the second time we got close to winning the title (last time was Miriam Quiambao at 1st runner-up in 1999, thanks Miera!) since the 1970s with Margie Moran winning the title. So, fuck off and leave Venus Raj alone, dammit!
