The last time I had a general checkup was back in 2008 as part of my pre-employment requirements for the company I was working for. Then, there was my visit to the OB-Gyne in 2009 where I was diagnosed of PCOS and they also found a small myoma in me. That was the last time I had myself checked.
Even though my mother and brother are both nurses, I'm pretty scared of undergoing checkups. I remember there was a time this doctor was checking my blood pressure. I was so nervous that she said I have to relax or something 'cause the reading was too high. *LOL* I know, I'm laughing at it now, but after I relaxed, drank some water, and went back, my BP normalized.
What scares me about these checkups is knowing I'm sick of something and that it could cause me my life. I know, it's better that I know, right? At least I'll be prepared. But, I don't want that to hinder how I live my life. I know myself and it'll pretty scare the heck out of me.
I know, I should be responsible when it comes to my health. Though I'm eating healthier now and I've already quit smoking, I know I still have to undergo regular checkups to ensure I'm doing okay, especially now that I found out we have a history of diabetes in our family, my father's side. *sigh* That's one of the scariest diagnosis ever. So, now, I begged my mother to stop buying anything sweet for our own sakes.
Then, there's also my vision. The ophthalmologist who I want to perform my lasik surgery told me that I need to prepare myself. I haven't changed my eyeglasses yet for years! I know, there are cheap eyeglasses I can buy, but it's not really an issue with money, but I feel that switching to a new set of eyeglasses with higher grade will just worsen my already poor eyesight. So, I'll be stuck with these glasses for now 'til I have my lasik possibly next year. It's really hard having this poor vision so I'll make sure my future kid/s take care of their eyes. *sigh*
Anyway, we'll be receiving our new health cards really soon. As soon as that happens, I'll drag my mother for a checkup. I told her that we should make it a point to have a general / full checkup at least twice a year.
How about you? How often do you have yourself checked?
