My 2012 Gadget Wish List

Though I am a self-confessed geek, it was only last year that I got into buying gadgets for my mobile computing needs. I used to prefer spending on upgrades on my desktop or laptop computer rather than buy a new mobile phone or a new camera. I thought it’s more practical than sporting a new smartphone.

But, because of my ever growing need to be connected and how necessary it is for me now to be active in social networking / media sites because of my blogs and online jobs, it’s now a necessity to have a smartphone and / or anything that will keep me connected while I’m on the move. And, so, I’ve come up with my 2012 gadget wish list in the hopes that soon enough, I’d be able to purchase them to satisfy the geek in me. 🙂

Blackberry Bold 9900

Blackberry Bold 9900

Ever since I got my hands on one to test it at a gadget store, I couldn’t help but desire more to own a Blackberry Bold 9900. The keys are designed in a way to make it VERY comfortable for me to type. It also has a wider display and a touchscreen. Though I don’t like touchscreens anymore, it’s still more convenient to touch and drag when you need to access something really quickly than navigate through the trackpad.

This phone also fits comfortably on my hands. It’s also the thinnest Blackberry phone and has a 5-megapixel camera. I’ve tried using this more than once and I can’t get over it. I know it’s a bit pricey, but it’s still the only Blackberry phone I want now. ^_^

Apple iPad 2

Before I had my first iPad, I never thought I’d need or love owning one. But, after months of having it with me, it’s been really convenient to use. I can bring it wherever I go or I can even use it while I’m watching something on my computer. I use a lot of apps and play tons of games on it though mine was limited to 16GB only. Now, I miss it so much (long story) and I’m planning on buying an iPad 2 soon.

The iPad 2 is very slim too and lighter so I’m eyeing to get me one of this next year. ^_^

New DSLR Camera Lens

Nikkor 50mm f 1.8D lens

Ever since I owned a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera, my bro and I have been serious about taking better and appetizing photos for our food blog. We’ve been going back and forth on what we should buy next – an external flash or new lens.

After some convincing from fellow DSLR owners who have different lens they use for various subjects, we are now eyeing for a 50mm f/1.8D lens. The Nikkor one costs about Php 6,000, but I know it’ll be all worth it. 🙂

External Flash for my DSLR

External Camera Flash from CDR-King

Since I’ve decided to spend more on new lens, we found this external flash from CDR-King that I’m planning to buy. A couple of my fellow bloggers are using it and have been getting decent results so I know it’ll all be worth it. It’s priced at Php 1,080 when we last checked so it’s pretty inexpensive.

Well, that’s it for now for my 2012 gadget wish list. I still have a few more that I want to buy, but it’ll just be impractical. Like I want to own the best HTC phone I could find, or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. But, I know it won’t be necessary for me to have these other gadgets if I already have the ones I listed above. If I win in a contest, I’d probably be psyched. It’s been a LONGGG time since I last won a gadget so I’m hoping there’ll be a few more gadget prizes in store for me by next year. ^_^

How about you? What’s on your 2012 Gadget wish list? Share, please!

I Have Found The One

We’ve only been together for almost 2 weeks, but I think I’m falling in love with him. I haven’t felt like this for the longest time so for the past week, I was a little on the fence if I’d want to pursue my relationship with him or just let someone else enjoy what he has to offer. But, then again, I believed everyone and everything deserve a second chance. And now, I believe I have found THE ONE.

With that said, let me introduce you to my new baby… *LOL*

My Nikon D3100 DSLR camera - JustAnotherPixel.net

Yes, that’s a Nikon D3100 DSLR camera. I’ve been wishing to have one since time immemorial because I wanted to take food photography seriously. My Canon IXUS 220HS point-and-shoot camera just won’t cut it if I wanted to take better and more inviting photos of food we feature on Certified Foodies.

No, I didn’t spend money on this. Well, okay, technically, I did. But, I got this as a token of appreciation (as we, my "client", both agreed to refer to it) for all my hard work on a certain blog and website for a friend / client.

My bro Ken and I were super excited about it that we literally forced him to let us buy it immediately. Hahaha. But, we really appreciate it that my friend agreed and so my bro and I are having awesome time testing this baby out.

Here are 2 photos I took with it.

No special effects here, just a clear photo of these chips I got from Blogapalooza

See how much clearer (yes, that word’s accepted) my photos are?! I now understand why people invest on DSLRs. BUT, I still believe amazing photos are not a result of high-end cameras. It’s about the perspective of the one behind the lens. 🙂

Please, don’t judge. I’m fully aware that I need a ton more practice handling this camera. I barely even had time to read anything on the web or even the manual because of how busy I’ve been the past few days. BUT, we’ve already asked friends who own DSLRs, particularly Enzo of Juan Manila Express, so my bro’s a li’l better at it now. I’ve only managed to play around with the different settings (aperture, shutter speed, etc) and I think I’m getting the hang of it. Soooo, expect better photos from here on out. 🙂

Though I still wish I have the resources to purchase a D90, I am pretty happy with my D3100. We’re now saving up to buy accessories and tools to produce more awesome photos. If you have a suggestion, please holler at the comments section. 🙂

Now, my next target is to either buy a new laptop OR a desktop that I could use in my room. The one I’m currently using needs to go back to my shop. My old laptop Corveena failed on me. I’m thinking if I should just buy a new power adapter for her or what. I still got a few important files on there so I might just retrieve them and then sell her for a very cheap price so I can buy a new one. I’ve already scoured the web for technical specifications, like the list of best laptop computers at the source, so I can finally decide if I want a new laptop or a desktop.

I’m currently leaning towards buying a desktop instead ’cause I’m a heavy (quite literally *LoL*) computer user, especially now that I’ll be concentrating on designing websites and blogs professionally. I’ll write about my final decision once I’ve got the money to actually make that purchase. *LOL*

Laptop Scare!

Last week, Wednesday, Corveena, my laptop (yes, I stuck with the name I gave her *LOL*) got corrupted. A few hours before it all happened, we were in a hurry to pick up my bro from the airport. My mom was yelling at me to rush ‘cause the van we rented for the pickup was already waiting outside. I was restarting my laptop and had to immediately turn it off while Windows XP was still loading. I knew it’s a no-no to force shutdown a computer while Windows is loading, but I had no choice and just prayed there’ll be no issues when I return.

When I got back, this is the error message that welcomed me:

Missing or corrupt hal.dll - waaah - JustAnotherPixel.net

Well, the operating system got corrupted. I tried to repair it, but it didn’t work. So, I decided to fix it the next day. After a few more attempts to just repair it, I had to finally resort to reformatting the partition where Windows XP was installed.

FYI, my laptop has 3 partitions – drive C is for Windows; drive D is dedicated to my files for blogging, design, music and images; E for movies and games. So, when something like this happens, I only need to reformat drive C.

I deleted partition C to install Windows and I thought everything will go smoothly from there. I was wrong. After a few attempts, it gave me errors making me conclude that possibly, my hard drive was busted. But, I just couldn’t accept that. I mean, the only thing I did was to force shut down the laptop. So, I knew the problem was with my external DVD drive. I had to borrow my kumare Badeth’s DVD drive. I was right. After I reinstalled Windows using her drive, everything was a-okay again.

Whew! That really scared me! Though I was joking around saying that Corveena probably got jealous ‘cause I have my new baby with me, my new digicam Cooper (a Canon IXUS 220HS, I’ll write a review or post about him on my geek blog), I was still scared to death that the drive was indeed irreparable.

I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to backing up and saving files. So, it was really depressing when I found out I only backed up files that I needed for my computer shop on my external hard drive. *LOL* I know, I’m just laughing at the whole situation now, but when I was thinking my drive was already busted, I was fricking stressed by all the things I needed to re-do. It even came to a point when I was already looking at top Netbooks that I can afford. I mean, seriously? It was just a software issue. I knew it, but was too stressed to think straight. Hehehe.

Anyway, the lesson is back up, back up, back up!! I now backed up all the contents of my 2 partitions. I’ll also be backing them up on DVDs by the weekend. I cannot afford to be stressed like that again next time this happens or when Corveena completely crashes on me. I hope that day won’t ever come though.

Corveena’s been with me for 2 years now. She’s been really reliable, with minor problems here and there. Now, I’m having issues with the sound card. I can no longer listen to music without connecting earphones, headsets or my speakers. Her built-in webcam doesn’t work anymore. But, I’m still glad she’s okay now. Phew!
